'5764'
This second solo exhibition entitled '5764' by Czech artist Tibor Cervenak at the Emer Gallery is a passionate, vibrant and moving explosion of art and paint. The predominantly abstract show is peppered throughout with symbols such as circles, numbers, letters and arrows etched and scraped into the heavily textured canvas.
Tibor having made Belfast his homestead for some six years now must surely evoke influences both east and west in his work. This is conveyed in titles such as Red Landscape and Belfast Wheel. His more figurative paintings include Forest and Rainbow, Goldfish in Blue which depicts three yellow fish with a bright green, purple and blue background almost giving it a luminosity and Sunset which is like a red flame burning against a cold blue and grey background.
Tibor says "unlike most artists, I do not set out to paint a particular painting or subject. I let the painting evolve from the canvas, following an emotional pull rather than a visual goal." Staunchly adamant that he is a spiritual rather than religious person, the presence of fish, angels and the biblical, Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) demonstrates an artist who at the very least draws much inspiration from man's search for meaning.
A much matured Tibor continues to develop his relationship with the warm hues of orange, yellow and red. His Yellow with Black Composition, Full Moon and Orange with Black paintings are all typical of his more abstract approach, with one colour dominating and filling all but the outer reaches of the canvas. Etched in each, are the numerous letters, shapes and symbols that feature heavily in his work.
One can only be appreciative of this breath of fresh air Tibor's work has injected into the Irish Art scene. A mere fledgling in art terms, Tibor surely has a bright and successful future ahead of him.
