Hans Iten, landscape and flowerpainter, was born in Zurich and studied at the school of Art, St. Gall, Switzerland. After working some years in Paris he came to Belfast in 1904 to take up an appointment as a damask designer with McCrum, Watson, and Mercer Ltd. linen manufacturers, Linen Hall Street, and moved into 18 South Parade where he lived for the rest of his life. Known to his Ulster contemporaries as ‘John Iten’ he soon became closely associated with the Belfast Art Society and was elected a vice- president in 1906.
Iten’s landscapes were mainly scenes of County Antrim – principally Cushendall and Cushendun- and to a lesser extent, County Down. Nearer home he was inspired by the Lagan valley, in particular Belvoir Park.In 1908,he exhibited at the RHA for the first time – the Belfast Art Society showed eight pictures that year- and from then until his death he exhibited almost fifty works there, including a number of flowerpieces.
In 1920 he was represented by three works, including Fleurs de Campagne in the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery’s exhibition of early British watercolours and in 1926 had an exhibition at Rodman’s Art Gallery, Belfast. He subsequenty showed six works at the Fine Art Society, London, four at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and eight at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
